Flax Market Development

March 20, 2025

Flax Market Development

A market review is currently in progress that will provide a detailed analysis to support SaskOilseeds’ Staff as they build an informed flax market development plan. This initiative is designed to enhance strategic decision-making and foster growth within the flax sector.

Flax grown in Saskatchewan is predominantly intended for human consumption. Flaxseed is renowned for its nutritional benefits, as it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fibre and lignans. Lignans serve as antioxidants, a property not widely present in many foods, further enhancing flaxseeds’ value. Beyond its nutritional applications, flax is utilized as animal feed and serves various industrial purposes. These diverse applications underscore the importance of developing effective market strategies to address multiple sectors.

In 2014, Health Canada officially approved a health claim linking the consumption of ground whole flaxseed to the lowering of blood cholesterol, which is a significant risk factor for heart disease.

Provincial Market Development Investments

Canola Market Development

March 20, 2025

Canola Market Development

SaskOilseeds focuses on sharing the message of canola oil, meal, and biofuel in Canada to increase domestic consumption. We also provide core funding to Canola Council of Canada to support international canola market development efforts.

National Canola Marketing Program

SaskOilseeds partners with Alberta Canola and Manitoba Canola Growers under the Hello Canola campaign brand to increase Canadian consumer awareness and consumption of canola oil.

Canola oil is healthy, versatile, affordable, sustainable – and Canadian.

Our goal is to make canola the oil of choice for consumers across Canada. Canadians in western Canada have widely adopted canola oil for every day use in their homes, with a market penetration of more than 70%. Therefore, SaskOilseeds’ promotional efforts are concentrated in Ontario, where uptake of canola oil has not been as high and there are still opportunities for market development.

Our research demonstrates that:

Canola oil contains the least saturated fat of any cooking oil, making it one of the healthiest options available, making it ideal for use at home and on a commercial scale.

In Canada, canola oil qualifies for a health claim related to replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat and blood cholesterol lowering.

Canola meal has a nutritional profile ideally suited for livestock rations, and as a result, it is a widely used ingredient in North American livestock feed and aquaculture diet formulations.

Canolamazing.com has many resources for producers and nutritionists, including the canola meal nutrient profile, feeding guides, research directory, and library.

Canola is a high quality domestically sourced, sustainable biofuel feedstock that plays a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in transportation fuel.

Both of our national canola organizations are currently participating in the development of the federal Clean Fuel Standard in which canola biofuels would play an important role.

Market Opportunities

Saskatchewan flax producers currently have two main markets to sell straw into:

Registered Buyers

Are you a buyer of flaxseed or flax straw grown in Saskatchewan? Do you know your buyer responsibilities? Under the Oilseeds Development Plan Regulations, any person who buys flaxseed or flax straw produced in Saskatchewan must:

  • Register with SaskOilseeds each crop year (August 1 to the following July 31)
  • Deduct a levy of $2.36 per tonne of seed and $0.50 per tonne of straw from any payment made to flax producers
  • Report to SaskOilseeds, by the 20th of each month, the total volume of flaxseed and/or flax straw acquired from each producer for the previous month. The following information is required:
    • The amount of flaxseed and/or flax straw purchased from the producer;
    • The amount of levy being paid on behalf of the producer;
    • The name and address of the producer.
  • Remit the levy to SaskOilseeds within 55 days from the end of the month within which the levy was collected.

Canola

March 20, 2025

Canola

One of the most widely grown crops in Canada, canola plants produce beautiful small yellow flowers which develop into pods, resembling pea pods. Each pod contains tiny black seeds, made up of about 45% oil. Once harvested, canola seeds are crushed to release the oil contained within the seed.

Canola grown in Canada belongs to the Brassica napus B. rapa or B. juncea species which belong to a larger mustard family (Brassicaceae). Cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower are also part of this same botanical family.

Production Resources

SaskOilseeds works strategically with the canola network to provide Saskatchewan growers with the resources and tools needed to optimize canola production and profitability on their individual farms.

Marketing Resources

Canadian farmers need an open and competitive marketing environment to prosper.

This includes transparent and accountable government institutions that meet farmers’ needs, balanced grain marketing contracts, and timely pricing and marketing data.

  • KnowYourGrade.ca – provides info about representative sampling, dockage, grading, and available producer protections.

Canadian farmers work hard to produce crops to the highest standard.

The quality and reputation of Canadian canola, cereals and pulses is amongst the best in the world. Your on-farm practices DO make a difference. To avoid unacceptable residue levels in grain, keep it clean – use only acceptable crop protection products and use them correctly.

  • KeepItClean.ca – provides timely updates about potential market risks and resources to grow market-ready crops that meet the standards of domestic and export customers.

Field Scale Research

March 20, 2025

On-Farm Research Trials

SaskOilseeds’ on-farm research trials program aims to address farmer challenges by focusing on field-scale research, delivering valuable insights and solutions directly to canola farmers.

Top Notch Farming Trials Overview

In the program’s third-year, SaskOilseeds’ Top Notch Farming trials reached new heights and expanded significantly – a testament to the program’s impactful contributions to the farming community! The program started in 2023 with one protocol and 10 sites, then four protocols and 23 sites in 2024, and grew again to seven protocols and 31 sites in 2025.

By investing in research applicable at the farm level, SaskOilseeds emphasizes its commitment to growing producer prosperity. The goal of our program is to actively seek input from farmers and agronomists to shape future projects, and cultivate a collaborative network between SaskOilseeds, farmers, agronomists, and research specialists. We recruit cooperators each year prior to seeding. If at any time you have an idea for a future research project, please contact SaskOilseeds to let us know.

Why Participate in On-Farm Research?

  • Join a network of growers and agronomists who are interested in field-scale research and sharing on-farm results
  • Results are established with your equipment under your farm conditions and management practices to help you make decisions on your farm
  • A research specialist or agronomist will help support you through every step of the research process and collect data throughout the season
  • Gain primary access to the results of other on-farm, field scale trials in Saskatchewan

This program is available to registered canola growers in good standing.

Research Tax Credits

March 20, 2025

Research Tax Credits

Producers who paid a levy to SaskOilseeds and did not request a refund are eligible for tax credits for their investment in canola and/or flax funded research and development projects.

Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) Tax Incentive Program

For the 2025 crop/tax year, 25.5% of producers’ levy is eligible for the federal SR&ED tax credit (by means of cash refunds and/or reduction to taxes payable). The tax credit percentage is based on the dollar amount SaskOilseeds has invested in R&D that meets the criteria laid out by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

The program gives registered producers access to investment tax credits (by means of cash refunds and/or reduction to taxes payable) for their levy contributions that are spent on qualifying research.

Investment tax credits may be claimed by filing form T2038(IND) for farm individuals or T2SCH31 for farm corporations.

Saskatchewan Research and Development (SR&D) Tax Credit Program

In addition, farm corporations may also claim 15.6% of their levy contributions as a qualifying expenditure towards the SR&D tax credit program for the 2025 crop/tax year.

This credit may be claimed by filing form T2SCH403.
