Nominations & Election

May 11, 2026

Election Process & Eligibility

SaskOilseeds is governed by eight farmer directors who are democratically elected by levy payers to ensure the Commission’s strategic priorities are effectively executed by the Staff. Director responsibilities include five board meetings per year, plus participation on various committees and appointments to external boards.

Elections for SaskOilseeds’ Board of Directors are held every two years in the fall (2026, 2028, 2030). Farmers who have paid canola and/or flax levy within the two years prior to an election and not requested a refund are eligible to run in the election. Nominations package requirements include the submission of a biography and the signatures of five registered oilseed producers. Directors are elected for a four year term and are eligible to run for a second term, for a total of eight years.

Interested parties must complete and submit a nomination package before the deadline.

Role & Responsibilities of a SaskOilseeds Director

This year, SaskOilseeds will accept nominations to fill four positions on the Board of Directors. This is an important opportunity to influence decisions that will guide the future of canola, flax and the agriculture industry in Saskatchewan. We are seeking diverse candidates who are characteristic of our members at large (Saskatchewan oilseed farmers) to share their perspective at our Board table.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with other Directors to provide strategic direction for the professional Staff to execute
  • Attend Board meetings approximately 5 times per year (1.5-2 days each) and participate in conference calls as needed (1-3 hours each)
  • Stay apprised of board matters and review reports/minutes in preparation for efficient governance during board meetings
  • Build camaraderie with fellow Board members that fosters consensus
  • Represent SaskOilseeds on other Committee (included associated meetings and events) – ranging from 10 to 25 additional days per year
  • Be an ambassador for the Commission to enhance farmer’s awareness of its value
  • Fulfill a term of four years, with the potential to be re-elected once resulting in a maximum eight-year tenure

Preferential attributes include:

  • Active role in managing the farm operation
  • Canola is critical in the crop rotation
  • Interested in flax or other oilseeds
  • Education/experience in one or more of these areas: leadership, finance, research, agronomy, policy development, public relations, and/or governance

Compensation includes a per diem, mileage, and any travel expenses

Time commitment includes:

  • 5 board meetings per year (1.5-2 days each)
  • 2 to 3 board video calls per year (1-3 hours each)
  • 1 Annual General Meeting (January)
  • Optional attendance at Canadian Crops Convention and other similar events
  • Participation in Board sub-committees: Governance, Audit & Finance, and Research
  • Appointments to represent SaskOilseeds on external boards: Canola Council of Canada, Canadian Canola Growers Association, WCCRCC, Grain Growers of Canada, Farm & Food Care Sask, and Agriculture in the Classroom Sask

Application Process:

If you are a registered canola and/or flax producer (ie. you have sold either canola and/or flax and paid levy to SaskOilseeds anytime since August 1, 2024) and would like to take an active role in Saskatchewan’s oilseed industry, please complete the nomination package and submit it to the Returning Officer by Friday, September 11, 2026 at 12:00 noon CST.
