Project Description
The objective of this project was to develop early, high yielding flax varieties for northern and eastern Saskatchewan. Over the course of this study, 3795 yield plots and 5995 early generation rows of flax were grown at Canora, Indian head, and Melfort. Yield, agronomic and quality data were collected and analyzed from the yield plots and rows and individual plants were selected from early generation material. Selection was based on yield potential, lodging resistance and good agronomic type. The early generation material is being advanced in the winter nursery in California or in greenhouses and growth chambers in Morden or Saskatoon. Though this project was limited in duration, this study proved that it would be possible to breed for flax in northern and eastern areas of Saskatchewan by increasing the magnitude of early generation and yield testing in these areas. This would allow us to develop a variety of flax adapted to these two regions of the province.
